</you x=”Machina”> group show at Cornish Main Gallery Celestine Ocean, Nathan Haskins, Sean Lafferty, Squire Simpson, Untitled , 2018, found image animated projection, 9 min. <body> Living in the 21st century presents a seemingly unique set of problems to the average individual, and it appears life is more complex than ever. This is reflected in what feels like an endless stream of distractions and calls for attention, set out to draw our focus away or detract from the significances of day to day life. Simulacra— hyperreal, idealized, and paradoxically unsatisfactory imitations of objects or ideas— are increasingly prevalent in a world full of digital representation. Our mission is to not only draw attention to the existence of these simulations, but to interpret and expand on ideas relating to them. Through our research, we became aware that iterations of these phenomena have existed for millenia, and have therefore plagued humanity for just as long. However, in the digital age, these distractions have become more widespread and complex through channels such as mass marketing, social media, and data mining to curate advertising and content to the individual. Through these hypercapitalist developments, advertisements are increasingly able to influence standards of beauty, lifestyle, culture, and politics on a scale and efficiency unique to our current era; often while playing into concepts of hubris and vanity. They can be overemphasized and fictionalized which can cause a model of reality to be conflated with the true reality. With this exhibition we aim to supply a deeper understanding of these simulations we’re being faced with and draw conclusions that allow us to erase or diminish the impact they have on our lives. This presentation plays directly into this idea by itself being a mimesis of an existing thing - an art show collectively created and curated by students living through and studying the effects these phenomena have on the individual. Through constructing a projected space of our own, we hope to draw attention to the blurred lines between reality and our perception of such while simultaneously providing an approachable entrance into the realm of reflections, shadows, simulacra and apparitions. </body>
